What is Biochar?
Biochar is a highly stable, carbon-rich form of charcoal produced through pyrolysis—the thermal decomposition of organic biomass (such as wood waste, crop residues, or manures) at high temperatures in a low- or zero-oxygen environment. Unlike standard charcoal used for fuel, biochar is engineered specifically for soil amendment and carbon sequestration; its highly porous, honeycomb-like structure provides massive internal surface area that dramatically enhances a soil’s cation exchange capacity (CEC), moisture retention, and microbial habitat.
Why "Charged" Biochar?
Raw biochar acts like a dry sponge that initially pulls moisture and minerals away from surrounding soil, which can temporarily affect early plant growth. To prevent this, Deep South Earth pre-charges and inoculates its biochar with rich compost and beneficial biology as part of the blending process. This converts it into an active, enduring biological refuge that resists decay and enriches your soil ecosystem for years to come.
